Understanding Audio

Course fee includes a total of 4 hours of independent lab time. This class is for people who want to better visualize, understand and manipulate audio. Students will become familiar with audio equipment with hand on demonstration and practice. Students will learn to set up and configure microphones, boom poles, mixers and cameras for a variety of recording situations in order to capture audio with good fidelity. You will learn the importance of mixing and how to mix audio for your media art production. Examples include: documentary, music video, small film production, animation, media art, etc.You will learn about signal flow, how to troubleshoot audio problems, and finally be able to understand what the audio geeks are saying with their unique vocabulary and terminology. Other topics will include mixers, digital audio (including understanding sample rates and bit depth), and critical listening.


With 30 years in the audio field, Greg Gould began his career as a teenager. He monitored broadcasts of the New York Metropolitan Opera and then worked as an on-air radio disc jockey. As a professional sound engineer, musician and songwriter, he has mixed live concerts, produced full length recordings, and designed and installed professional sound systems. For the last 4 years Gould has worked with 911 Media Arts Center hosting its monthly Open Screening program.
