911 SCREENINGS
OCTOBER 2000
911 Windows presents:
KAIN KARAWAHN
FIRES UNDER FIRE
Thursday, Oct. 5th, 8pm
Karawahn, an internationally recognized artist, performer, videographer,
and photographer from Berlin, uses fire and pyrotechnics as his choice
of artistic medium. He visits Seattle as part of CoCA's New Prometheans
international fire festival (Sept. 28th - Oct. 7th). Karawahn will
install a five-part video & audio art installation titled FIRES under
FIRE using all of 911's storefront windows. Playing with fire, Karawahn
burns books, candles, and live video cameras to ask the question: "how
hot could it get if the internet is on fire?". The installation can be
viewed dusk 'til dawn from 911's exterior.
On Thursday, Oct. 5th at 911, Karawahn will screen video documentation
of past fire performances and discuss his work with the audience.
Saturday, Oct. 7th (at Sand Point), Karawahn debuts
"fireselfmusicianized," a collaborative music and sound pyrokalyptic
performance paying tribute to local son Jimi Hendrix and his first
guitar ignition. Call CoCA at (206) 728-1980 for a complete schedule of
New Promethans fire festival.

Free Open to the Public!
Coils / Episode 4, Skin So Thick

Episode 4, Skin So Thick, is the fourth installment in a body of work
that waffles between seduction and repulsion. Five richly colored video
projections pulsate in 911's five large storefront windows to create a
strangely mesmerizing experience. In fleshy red landscapes,
subterranean burrowers struggle to surface, emphasizing the poignancy of
all strained or doomed endeavors. Jennifer West is curator of video art
at Commencement Art Gallery in Tacoma, and is a visiting artist at
Cornish College for the Arts and Evergreen State College. Her videos,
films, and multi-media art installations have been exhibited
internationally.

WHY NOT MONORAIL?
by Kim Pedersen (15 min)
People like monorail! Seattle voters want monorail! However, what about
the arguments against it? Is it more expensive than light rail or
subways? Does it block the light? What about emergency evacuation? "Why
not Monorail" intelligently debunks each argument and reveals exactly
why government, unions and contractors want light rail (street level
trolleys) and expensive tunnels (Boston's Big Dig) instead. Learn the
facts from this information packed video that shows monorail is being
used for transit successfully, and has been doing so for many years in
cities around the world. www.monorails.org
MOVING BEYOND AUTO AMERICA
by Transportation 2000 (28 min)
Moving Beyond Auto America questions America's dependence on the
automobile and presents alternative transportation systems already in
use around the globe. This fast-paced video features consumer advocate
Ralph Nader and 17 of the nation's foremost transportation experts, who
critically analyze our "love affair" with the auto and question how much
longer we can rely so heavily on our sacred cars. The video leaves the
viewer with the positive impression that there are realistic
alternatives to improve transportation and in turn improve the quality
of our lives.

911 presents:
FREAKY FLICKS
Friday October 27th, 8pm
$5 / $3 (911 members)
The horror genre is so played out that its cinematic language has turned
into parody. Even horror's latest twist, the funny-scary movie, is
tired. Have we run out of things to fear in cinema? Tonight's program
asserts that we should be afraid... very afraid. Terror has become
un-dead in the form of media art. It lurks on the shadowy fringes of
narrative. See your deepest fears projected onto the silver screen -
isolation, addiction, aliens, predators. There's still plenty to be
afraid of.
ROSWELL
by Bill Brown (20 min)
A secret diary of alien theories and alienated thoughts during one man's
trek to Roswell, New Mexico. Bill is earthier than Hunter S. Thompson
and spacier than J.D. Salinger as he searches for big answers to little
questions along the enigmatic desert road. He ponders how time and
travel connect in the form of flying saucers, love letters, and serial
television shows. And then tackles the mystery of why in the world a UFO
chose to land in Roswell.
LOVERDOSIS
by Andres Tapia-Urzua (15 min)
A poignant representation of alienated existences within a
techno-scientific world where intimacy is lost because of lack of
identity.
HARDHEAD FLAIR
by Erika Yeomans and Aaron Levine (5 min)
A journey that probes the darkest corners of the sexual psyche, Hardhead
Flair portrays a three-way power-play that leaves the viewer wondering
who is the abuser and who is abused.
LOVE STALKS
by Joseph Guindi (14 min)
A caustic narrative about a woman who confronts the man who's been
following her, and the unexpected consequences that follow.
KILLER KRAPPER
by Armondo Munoz (6 min)
You were finally able to feel comfortable in the WC now that your
Psycho-induced shower-anxiety has worn off. Well forget about it bub,
there's a new horror in the head.
