PUNK INTERNATIONAL
Friday, January 17, 8pm
$5 / $3 (911 members)

Proto-punk acts like "The Strokes" are all the rage in the mainstream. However, the inspiration is gone. Real punk rock, the kind that seethes on the fringes, is alive and well, but not here. It's moved on to new nations and communities. Punk not dead, it's international.

Our Nation: A Korean Punk Rock Community
By Timothy R. Tangherlini and Stephen J. Epstein
The rise of a new youth subculture in the Republic of Korea is an outgrowth of dramatic changes occurring there. The country elected its first civilian president, it experienced new prosperity, and became increasingly exposed to Western influences. Young Koreans became exposed a steady stream of new musical influences. Our Nation is a stunning portrayal of how Korean youth are using punk rock to find their voices in a rapidly changing culture.

Beyond The Screams: A Latino Hardcore Punk Documentary
By Martin Sorrondeguy
Martin Sorrondeguy, lead singer of the Chicago-based band El Crudo, takes us on a musical history tour of Latino punk rock. The bands featured from Mexico City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Berkeley testify to the intent of their music as political resistance. This isn't just chunky chords and crackling vocals. Beyond The Screams is the sound of hope mixed with rage.

SOUTHWEST PARANOIA
Friday, January 24th 8pm
$5 / $3 (911 members)
As we enter the darkest days of Northwest winter, many of us yearn to leave for points South. But wait, not so fast! The malicious hovering orb known as "the Sun" weaves a wicked web of radiation, dust and paranoia. It's true, we have documentaries to prove it. Tonight, we will safely peek from behind our protective cloud layer and behold the vile results of blue skies and warm breezes.

The Magnificent Andersons
By Julie Morrison
Deep within Nevada, nestled against the mountain range that cloaks Area 51, sits the small town of Overton. There's not much to see there, that is, if you don't count the nightly UFO sightings and visits from silent black helicopters. Against this backdrop, Terry and Gerri Anderson struggle to raise a family while wrestling with the unnerving knowledge that the end is near. They believe that quite soon, the government will erode their civil liberties and create a massive database capable of data mining minute details of their lives. Ha! How crazy is that?

Forbidden City
By Matt Ehrling
This film explores the phenomenon of secured, walled communities, and the psychology that drives them. The residential neighborhoods of southern Nevada are marketed as perfect American communities. However with gates, cameras and armed guards posted at every turn, life inside these gated enclaves suggests an unusual fusion of paradise and authoritarian rule. The spectacle of middle America choosing to barricade itself against the outside world raises questions about the future of social cohesion in America, and the extent to which we are willing to sacrifice our autonomy for the promise of "security".
