Architecture for Video Art

Seattle Art Museum - Lecture Hall

Iole Alessandrini, an Italian architect from Rome and a Fellow of the Northwest Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in Italy, will be lecturing on her project "Architecture for Video Art" at the Seattle Art Museum. Participating at the lecture will be Marianna Haniger, a local video artist, who will show examples of her multi-channel video art works and explore new possibilites for expression and meaning in video art through the interaction of art and architure.

Open Screening

After twelve years, there isn't much that hasn't been shown at Open Screening. Think of it like public access, except that the guy giving the bizarre rant is sitting right next to you.

If you have anything that you would like to show, bring it to 911 the second Monday of each month for the Open Screening. Call ahead to reserve a spot if you want to show works longer than 20 minutes or on other formats besides VHS. Staci 682-6552


Raise the Roof

For many living in Washington, home, the keystone of health and happiness is not easily obtained. Fortunately, there are many innovative programs that provide opportunities for people of low income to live a stable lifestyle through affordable rent or home ownership.

Raise the Roof is a twenty minute documentary that explores issues surrounding affordable housing. It is told from the perspective of community organizations, bankers, builders, and people living in and nearby housing projects. This 911 produced documentary aims to debunk stereotypes and create positive images of people in need of housing assistance, the projects themselves, and the impact of the projects on the surrounding neighborhoods.


Animator's Social

Highlights from the last Animator's Social included a 16mm film projector from the 18th century and a networking fiesta around the bean dip. All animators are encouraged to screen anything from crusty old school reels shot on 8mm to shiny dancing toothpaste tubes rendered on your home SGI workstation.

On the books for June's social is Ron Noble's "Living with Ridalyn" a work in progress featuring a big bowl of "Lumpy Charms" and not much milk.

Douglas Rushkoff

911 is eager to expose the prose of Doug Rushkoff to the 911 membership. Doug is the Author of Media Virus in which he reveals the tiny memes responsible for subverting mainstream media and modes of thought. Doug's subject for this discussion is Good, Evil and the Internet , a hip topic indeed. Fantastic Mr. Rushkoff's appearance is a project of 911's venerable: web.club

Come laugh and cry with us! Revealing and healing the secret shame of local film and video makers as they share their most crude, pretentious, superficial, and embarrassing moments on their way to becoming "real" artists. See works by Marianna Haniger, Peter Mitchell, Stacy Simpson, Shinique Smith, Matt Wilkens and many more who wish to remain anonymous at this time. Prizes will be awarded in categories such as "Most Artistically Pretentious," "Most Influenced by Absurd French Theory" and "Most Technically Inept." A secret ballot of the festival audience will award the prize for "Worst of Show." If you have a work you would like to unveil, this is your opportunity for artistic catharsis! Submit now: there's always room at the bottom. Call ahead to show formats other than VHS.

"Open Season", Madigan and the video work's of Harper Carter.

a collaborative multi medium show.

"Open Season" is a two person theater experience that confronts the American myth of the happy home as it delves in to domestic violence issues. The work features original music and incorporates video clips.

The evening will feature the acoustic music of Madigan, "ascender and materializer of the subtle." Madigan has toured with Morphine, been featured on KCTS and recently traveled to Michigan to play at the Womens Festival in front of 10,000 people.

Two video shorts by Harper Carter:

"Not a Pretty Picture" illustrates an ignorance of diversity through the development of a picture. "Let Them Eat Cake" shows the distribution of "wealth" as represented by a chocolate cake, as two characters have their just desserts.

Volunteers from M.O.N.S.T.E.R. will be present to distribute literature, answer questions and wear funky masks.
