Transport from Paradise
Based on the short stories of Arnost Lustig (1962), this landmark Czech film from the early 1960's is rarely shown outside of Eastern Europe
Join 911 for a world premiere of the definitive dumpster diving video by Suzanne Girot, a video artist based in Felton, CA. The Ultimate Dive features John Hoffman, Seattle-based author of The Art & Science of Dumpster Diving [Loompanics Press, Port Townsend].
A night of utter garbage awaits you. The Ultimate Dive is a tongue-in-cheek how-to video about dumpster diving by the master of the craft, Seattle's own John Hoffman. He takes us on a tour of the area's finest dumpsters, and illustrates the fine points of clothing, equipment and body positions. A tour of the Center for Urban Ecology's rummage sale illustrates the potential for marketing "retrieved goods." The video also features original music by Guitar Slim, claymation sequences by Santa Cruz animators Bill & Clay, and an original soundtrack by the Ugly Mugs.
Also featured is Girot's 1993 documentary Garbage Stories, featuring tours of four innovative waste reduction programs in Northern California. Included is an artist-in-residence program at a San Francisco dump, and a sewage treatment facility in Arcata, California that utilizes an entire marsh wetland area.
Both the author and videographer join 911 for the video premiere of The Ultimate Dive with a reception & video/book signing to follow.
Wagon trains first brought settlers to the American West in the early 1800's. They found untamed country, rich with resources including roaring rivers teeming with wild salmon. More than 15 million king salmon once swam the Columbia River. Today, not even a million remain. The near extinction of wild salmon and the loss of a unique way of life, as old as the West itself, is a regional tragedy. Join us in examining the problems causing the destruction of wild salmon and their habitat. Hear the stories of the few men and women who still bring salmon to our markets and restaurants. One of the filmmakers will be present at the screening to answer questions.
Run for the hills! Cornish College of the Arts takes over the screening room at 911 Media Arts Center for an evening of their latest and greatest student work. Selections shown will include documentaries by Heather Hart and An-Magrith Erlandsen, experimental work using layering, re-scanning and decomposition by James Schaeffer, and satire from Tara Jones, who's humor and sarcasm question traditional American values. Plus more!
The Pat Phlymm show is a semi-perverse medley of song, dance, poetry, slides and antics. Assuredly not for the conservative, this is a modern art performance that tests moral boundaries and toys with the mundane. Somewhat shocking to the narrow-minded, this performance delights, repulses and stimulates the alter-egos of those willing to share in the mayhem. Best described as a fusion of John Denver and GWAR, the show expresses truth and weirdness in its most raw form.
Probing deeply into Seattle's underground arts scene, In Your Blood uncovers illicit stimulation in pursuit of creative breakthroughs. Since the dawn of human history, extreme intoxication has been used in the pursuit of spirituality and artistic creation. Norman Mailer once said, "The artist who exploits drugs in order to make artistic breakthroughs is borrowing from his future, and in the event that he has bankrupted his own future, due to addiction, he is then stealing from our collective soul."
In Your Blood is about theft from the collective soul. Writer Lorn Richey, and Director Jeff Brunk, have tweaked the conventions of horror/vampire films to create a work that transcends its low-budget beginnings.
Walking corpses! The living dead! Your Mother-in-law! Zombified is an exploration of the zombie character. Gregory ÔDeadÕlia offers a curious attempt at explaining the unseen forces behind the graphic horror, disease and mythology of the walking dead. Special effects may keep them alive, however, supernatural powers truly control them. Reflections of the human character are alive and well in this dramatic form of imaginative terror. Everyone is welcome to bring in their own zombie film on VHS to screen after the presentation. Please dress-up for a frighteningly fun time. And be warned, some footage may be too "gross" for some viewers.
