April Screenings

Open Screening
April 14th, 8pm
$1 (cheap)

The February Open Screening attracted a lot of attention as Fast Forward Media Lab presented their work with at-risk youths. This particular event is an archetypal model for all Open Screenings. Open Screening is at its most gratifying when used as a resource for community development.

In April, Peggy Case, KCTS producer and independent filmmaker, will be our guest for Open Screening. She will show samples of her work and be on-hand to comment on yours.

Open Screening continues to grow and change according to the desires of participants. If you wish to participate, please contact Helen Davis or Staci Simpson at 206-682-6552.

Chariot Races

911, REI, ITT Hartford, The Mountainzone and Ski For All are proud to present The Chariot Races, a half-hour documentary revealing how sports and technology can help people with disabilities make the transition to become physically and spiritually enabled. The Chariot Races takes a roller-coaster ride through the "anything but paralyzed" life of 25 year-old John Davis, a Paralympic gold medalist and rebel rider of an off-road wheelchair. John pioneered the sport and competes professionally on the NORBA downhill mountain bike circuit.

The film focuses on the intensity of disabled sports. Filming highlights include the World Championships in Disabled Skiing in Lech, Austria, high-speed downhill runs at the NORBA national series mountain bike race in the mountains of Southern California, and an insane joyride through the streets of San Francisco. Filmed in 16mm color with a truly eclectic soundtrack, The Chariot Races will surely give you a new perspective on the true potential of people with disabilities. Animator's Social
Featuring David Donnar's Espresso Depresso
Friday, April 25th, 8pm
$2 (or bring snacks)

Espresso Depresso Beatniks
Espresso Depresso

The spring Animator's Social welcomes David Donnar's dark satire, Espresso Depresso. Anyone who has pulled java can relate to David's tale of a barista tormented by a daily procession of high-octane characters. The digitally produced work was edited and exported to video at 911.

This is the second short by David Donnar. Other projects include "Big Dumb Fat Stupid Baby," currently on tour with the Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, and "It's Show Time," a two-minute animated policy preview for movie theaters.

As always, the Animator's Social welcomes your work. We encourage you to bring anything from a pencil test to a fully rendered digital masterpiece. Please call ahead to show formats other than VHS. Also, April's social encourages you to bring highly caffeinated beverages so we can feel the "Depresso" vibe.

The man in Pump with a Chump
Pump with a Chump

Mike Cady has done it again! For the sixteenth year in a row, an esteemed panel of judges, including some 911 folk, pore through an enormous pile of tapes to select the very best shorts for your enjoyment. This year's selections include:

Swan's Painting by Anne Farrell. These Swans paint an enchanting portrait of how they came to be. Video and computer imaging create a beautiful art work which seeks to bring the natural world into the digital one.

Pump With A Chump by Modi. Burly punk hero, Henry Rollins, plays personal trainer for Manny Chevrolet. A touching tale of domesticated conversion, rather like Oprah's Make the Connection....NOT!

Woodstock Revisited by Modi. Manny Chevrolet reports from Woodstock '94 in an inimitable, in-your-face East Coast style.

The World has a Heart Too by Don M. Valenzuela. A music video style P.S.A. created to raise awareness of your everyday impact on Mother Earth.

Fuzzy Guns by Anthony Flackett. "I am red, I am green, we're all monsters." These lovable monsters sing, dance and carry M-16s.

Tony and Rachel go to Tent Rocks Gorge by Anthony Flackett. Tony and Rachel sink to new depths in a beautiful corner of New Mexico.

The Voice of God by Rick Phillips and Joel Baird - O.i.C. A film of great pith and moment combines a chair, milky paint and an epiphany.

I Am Born by Rick Phillips and Joel Baird - O.i.C. As much a celebration of oversaturated color super 8, as it is a celebration of the nostalgic myth that is rural American family life.

The Candle by Rick Phillips and Joel Baird - O.i.C. Obfuscated sound and image beckons the viewer to enter the film. When the photoplay is unveiled, its impact is greatly increased.

Forevermore by Tom DeWitt Ditto. Grab your red and blue specs. This fantasy landscape is in 3D! Yee haw!

General Numbness by Lawrence White. A chilly, full-body Novocaine coma isn't even close to this General.

God's a Guy by Lawrence White. When God does his laundry he does a load of whites and a load of whites.

Show Some Respect by Lawrence White. This rap song has a chorus that's easy to sing along with. You wouldn't want to meet these ladies in a dark alley after the Superbowl.

Machine by Joe Sola. Floyd the Barber would absolutely love this short. There is a wide world of great coiffeurs outside of Mayberry.

The Tool Box by Tatiana Loureiro. Experimental animation employs video in a step printing style to tell the tale of happy, prancing gadgets and the devouring carrycase.
