VJ NIGHT

Hosted by VJ scobot
Musical Direction by Hyansynth

Every 3rd Thursday of the Month

Half social, half showcase the VJ Night is both a regular meeting point for VJs, DJs, and everyone who is fascinated by this highly artistic medium as well as a showcase of some of the best work of local talents. VJing as an emerging art form has yet to find a home in Seattle (in the US as a matter of fact) outside of the regular club scene and we have set out to change that. Every month we invite local artists to share their work and talk about their craft—what they do, why they do it and how they do it. We are excited to provide a forum for audiovisual creatives to meet, share, and enjoy the art of VJing.

For more information, please contact VJ scobot (alias Scott Bennett) at vjnight@911media.org.

Thursday,  July  19th, 7:30 - 10:00PM special guest:  EPIPHANOUS
About Epiphanous:Epiphanous has found himself in the VJ community by the purest of accidents. After spending a few years, mastering digital based audio production graphic design, and working with a few bands plus a solo project, he found himself on Seattle Public Access TV, producing a successful 26-episode television season entirely on a home PC, without touching a camera once. DJ friends asked him to come out and do visual projections set to the music and this caught the attention of local promoters. Over the past 4 years, he has shared the stage with local (KJ Sawka, Beehive, Miss Solar System, Decibel Festival), as well as national and international music acts (AmonTobin, BassNectar, Blake Lewis) and has been involved in a variety of events around the U.S and Canada. Epiphanous has been in the lab working on creating a fully synchronized Audio/Visual experience to bring to the scene. www.epiphanous.com

Thu, Apr 19, 7:30-10:00pm
with special guest Scott K. James with Andy Seaver

Thanks again to Barry Penland, aka PIXELFLIP, for being our guest at last month's VJ NIGHT! Barry and Hyasynth played an awesome set and it was a joy to see PIXELFLIP's DVJ in action! ABOUT:Scott K. James is a Seattle based visualist focused on live composition and performance and live visual environments. In 2001 he joined the Spaceboat.tv collective where his work included performances at Seattle's Experience Music Project and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. As co-founder of The Now Device, he has developed a rhythmical and texture-oriented visual style using self-produced content, almost entirely shot by hand, processed and edited for maximum impact. http://www.scottkevajames.com/ Andy Seaver grew up in the state of Maine, on the eastern coast of the United States. He studied music at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and finally moved out to Seattle, Washington, to explore his West Coast intuitions. His approach is to create electronic music through the manipulation of recorded noises. Although this "musique-concrete" approach to production is certainly nothing new, Andy finds it exciting to disguise ordinary sounds through, primarily, combination filtering and pitch distortion.

Upon returning to his original home of Seattle in 2003 he found sanctuary in the local scene working with the talents of Jay Mason, Fortune Kiki, Jacob London and the SunTzu Sound crew. Barry's style is rooted in abstraction and enjoys the energy of the crowd and DJ for ultimate artistic direction.

Tim Weeks, a.k.a. Spyscience, started his exploration of video two years ago projecting pre-designed movies for live shows for local bands. His work has evolved from these music videos, to live projection, to live VJ mixing for the electronic scene. Currently blending stock film and his own footage, Spyscience is moving toward a library of original material. Being a drummer by nature, he is focusing more on live VJ experience as a way to not only express his vision, but as a means to translate rhythm to the screen. www.spyscience.net

About VJ scobot:
VJ scobot is currently the resident VJ at the See Sound Lounge (Belltown) where he performs every Friday and Saturday night alongside some of the top DJs on the West Cost. He also produces content and performances for corporate events including such clients as: The Pacific NW Ballet, Microsoft, Midway, CoCA and Nordstrom.
His style can best be described as "visual jazz", for its live, improvisational spirit. "My goal is to manifest the music - visually - not just where the beat begins and ends, but to express the spaces between the beats, using the motion within the motion of the video clip to capture the visceral feel of the music. It is an organic reaction to the music - how the music moves me, is what I try to express on the screen." For more information about VJ scobot and to check out clips of his work, please visit: www.scobot.com or www.myspace.com/vjscobot

About Hyasynth:
Hyasynth (alias Karen Baskett) is a resident with De La Crème Soundsystem, and is working hard to keep the electronic music scene alive in Seattle. A recent transplant from NYC, Hyasynth has been a DJ for 5 years and experiments with various genres of music. Her specialty is club-style house music, but her collection is quite diverse. Currently she holds residencies at Merchant’s Café and Doc’s Lounge, and is working on the release of her fifth live mix.
As a former professional dancer & figure skater, Karen understands the impact of the right song at the right time with a live audience. She enjoys playing with VJs because of the magic that happens when technology meets improvisation, and is excited to help bring more recognition to this art form here in the US. For more info about Hyasynth please visit www.myspace.com/djhyasynth

What is a VJ?
A VJ is a performance artist who manipulates video imagery, LIVE, on large displays and projections, often at concerts, nightclubs and music festivals. A VJ uses video in much the same way that a DJ mixes records. The techniques and equipment vary but the basic principles remain the same (e.g. selecting, cross fading, scratching, cutting and sampling). Some VJs concentrate on just visuals, mixing and manipulating video or film in tandem with a DJ, others incorporate audio with their visuals to create stunning, multilayered audio visual experiences.
