New Works Laboratory 2001
Closing Night Discussion & Reception
October, 24th 6:30pm
New City Theater Space

The New Works Laboratory 2001 exhibit will conclude, following a moderated panel discussion with the artists and the curatorial team, on Wednesday, Oct 24th in the New City Theater space. The panel discussion will commence at 6.30pm and is free to the public. Come one, come all!

911 Media Arts Center together with the Henry Art Gallery opened the doors to the New Works Laboratory 2001 on September 29th in a unique site-specific environment on Capitol Hill - the New City Theater space at First Christian Church on Broadway. In the two weeks that have followed, this innovative exhibit has received praise from both the media and visitors alike for its ability to challenge the conflict between the traditional and the modern. While Wednesday, October 24th, is the closing night of this experimental collaboration of artistic aesthetics with emerging forms of digital media, the exhibit cannot close without a celebration. The closing evening offers a rare glimpse of the exhibit through the eyes of the creators, founders, and producers. Heather Dew Oaksen, media artist and associate Professor, Art Department at Cornish College of the Arts, will moderate a discussion between the artists and the curatorial teams of both the Henry Art Gallery and 911 Media Arts Center. A catered reception will follow, with innovative video mixing by Mlineum Productions.

As new technologies and digital media change the face of contemporary art, 911 Media Arts Center supports artists who are at the forefront of this innovation. Responding directly to the many challenges facing visual artists and new media artists, 911 Media Arts Center in collaboration with the Henry Art Gallery, created the inaugural New Works Laboratory in 1998. The intention with this intensive residency program is to pair visual artists working in traditional media with digital media artists experimenting with new technologies to co-create and exhibit new and innovative works of art. The 2001 teams of artists are;
