The Typing Explosion
Artist in Residence 2002
Local performance poets The Typing Explosion were featured in this half-hour
documentary created by Cynthia Rose during her residency at 911. The piece
attempts to creatively convey both the group's unique spectacle (equal parts
audio art and wordless performance) and their distinct individual perspectives.
The piece was created in collaboration with Typing Explosion performers Rachel
Kessler, Sierra Nelson, and Sarah Polle. The Typing Explosion has performed at
numerous venues in Seattle and up and down the West Coast. Their play Dear Diane,
premiered at On the Boards in 2001, performing to sold-out crowds and rave
critical reviews.
The Typing Explosion and Cynthia Rose's documentary were featured at Gallerie
Holly Snapp during the 2003 Venice Bienniale, getting rave reviews from audiences
and European press.
Cynthia Rose has worked for 20 years as a broadcaster, writer, journalist, and
author. She has been a producer, writer, and consultant for a variety of
arts-based features and discussions for BBC-TV and MTV Europe, many of which
focused on emerging Seattle artists. Until recently, Cynthia was a frequent arts
writer/critic for the Seattle Times.
The 2002 Artist in Residence program was made possible through generous funding
from the Allen Foundation for the Arts, the Andrea Frank Foundation and the
National Endowment for the Arts.
