HIGHWAYS
a 911 windows installation by
Vic Ariel
Exhibition dates: APRIL 9 - MAY 7, 1999
911 Media Arts Center, 117 Yale Ave North, Seattle
911 Media Arts Center presents HIGHWAYS, a site-specific mixed-media installation by Vic Ariel in 911s Windows on view April 9 - May 7, 1999. An opening reception for the artist will be held Friday, April 9, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Ongoing since 911s incorporation in 1984, the 911 Windows program continues to offer area artists a unique installation opportunity in five large storefront windows facing a major intersection at 117 Yale Avenue North (one block south of the flagship REI building).
In the same context of post W.W.II documentary films, photo realism and the storage materials found in time capsules, HIGHWAYS consists of the same elements of reflection upon the immediate environment. The windows installation becomes open-faced time-capsules, displaying artifacts and visual reminders of a place in metamorphosis -- the rapidly changing face of the Cascadia neighborhood surrounding 911.
The installation moves at the speed of a fast highway, creating a metaphor for the speed of change in the communities of urban Seattle. Red and blue lights fill the window space symbolizing the flashing lights of a highway patrol car. The images and objects in the installation have been "pulled over" for breaking the speed limit of "human time." Like the sidelines of an interstate freeway, the objects become the debris of the passage of time.
Artist Vic Ariel moved to Seattle last year from Southern California, where his work has been exhibited in many gallery spaces in San Diego and San Francisco. Ariel has an upcoming site-specific exhibition
May 7 through July 9 in the video installation room at Commencement Art Gallery in Tacoma, WA.
