interactive film cutup

a 911 windows installation by

art installation:
Exhibition dates: March 5 - 26, 1999
911 Media Arts Center, 117 Yale Ave North, Seattle

911 Media Arts Center proudly announces its 1999 series of artist Window installations. Ongoing since 911’s incorporation in 1984, the Windows program continues to offer area artists a unique installation opportunity in five large storefront windows facing a major intersection at 117 Yale Avenue North (one block south of the flagship REI building).

March 5 - 26 1999, 911 presents interactive film cutup, interactive cut-up movie montages back-projected onto one of 911’s storefront windows. interactive film cutup consists of multiple 8mm film projectors, multiple high-school filmstrip projectors, and multiple tape recorders randomly projecting static and moving images, and sound manipulated by the public from the exterior of the building. Orchestrated and chance groupings of films, strips, and sound allow an infinite combination of movies to be experienced. interactive film cutup invites and allows the public’s participation into the filmmaking process despite the barrier of the glass window. The installation may be viewed dusk to dawn.

Conceived and installed by artist Paul Davies, the installation features films by Rachel Perlman, Bonita Finkle and Dave Hicks, and sound by Dave Vormittag. Paul Davies received his education at Ontario College of Art in the Department of New Media and at University of Toronto in Engineering Science. He has exhibited at InterAccess and Apocalypse Gallery in Toronto, and continues his work with Toronto’s Art and Robotics Group. A free opening reception for the artists will be held Friday, March 5 at 911 Media Arts Center from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
