Youth Programs Flourish @ 911
The Spotlight shines brightly on youth Thursday evening, 6 to 8 pm, on July 31st at 911 Seattle Media Arts Center. The only Arts Center in South Lake Union proudly presents the final projects from area teens in the Puget Sound. Join us for an evening of films, videos, graphics, and games as the participants of our youth programs gather to celebrate their work! Youth works include the South Park, "Reel Eyes" and Web 101 programs, Hmong Youth Film Video, Coyote Animation, Young Producer's Project - Old Firehouse at Redmond, Media Pirates Ahoy! and Seattle Youth Employment Program.

Hmong Youth Film
The Hmong Youth Film Club will present films made during their 12-week filmmaking intensive with 911 staff member Ian Harrison. This project was made possible by the generous support of Washington State University Extension Farm Project, Bee Cha and Todd Murray.
Seven Seattle Youth Employment Program [SYEP] youth are a part of the center from June 23-August 1, learning what it takes to be a multimedia designer and videographer, as well as learn what is involved in the operations of a non-profit.
A blog for the program has been set up for anybody to track the student's progress on various projects. It can be found here. In the right-hand column of that page a blogroll of every student in the class is presented, for a more personal focus.
Web Skills 101 at South Park in Partnership with Associated Recreation Council [ARC]
The students were introduced to the internet and web design from the bottom up; It covered the basics of HTML coding, writing cascading style sheets (CSS), implementing javascript, and embedding video. Following through the process of conceptualizing, structuring and deploying electronic media via the Internet, students created web ppages to display their work. All these skills were taught with media and internet literacy in mind building both technical and analytical skills.

South Park Young Producers Program :: REEL EYES
The after school Young Producer Program: Video Underground. returned to the South Park Community Center, with a grant from the Mayors office, offering the class called "Reel Eyes", The students shot edited and produced short features based on the daily lives in one of Seattle's most diverse communities.
Coyote Animation at 911 Media
13 students made video cartoons in 911’s Film/Media Production Studio. With stop-motion, cut-out clip art, claymation and flip- books, they worked solo & teamed up to create cool cartoon shorts. They edited, added music & voice-overs, just like in the industry.
THE YOUNG PRODUCER"S PROJECT at OLD FIRE HOUSE of REDMOND.
Students learn media literacy, critical viewing skills, technical training, and analysis of cinema techniques such as camera angles, lighting, shot composition, editing, sound, and story development. Using these skills and the media arts technology from 911 Media Arts Center, youth formed crews, wrote, storyboarded, directed, shot, and edited short videos, producing an audio and visual account of their personal and community experiences.
MEDIA PIRATES AHOY! in Partnership with the Center for Wooden Boats. A bold primer in both sailing fundamentals and renegade filmmaking brought to you jointly by 911 Media Arts and The Center for Wooden Boats. ARRRGH! Students will learn to sail, and shoot and edit digital video as they make films related to boats and the water. By combining the physical immediacy of sailing with the voice and power of filmmaking, the class provided students with some survival skills for navigating the strange seas of our time.
The area of youth education continues to grow and expand at 911. We have had a great time so far- we began the summer with Games 101 and next week begin Media Priates AHOY!

This week long summer program was a great success, Jason worked with youth from the Seattle Youth Employment Program creating new and innovative analogue games.

Classes we had this SUMMER to 911

This camp is an introduction game design and the creation of interactive experiences. SO its two weeks of fun and games. Well sort of… you will play shriek and laugh out loud while engaged in studying games of all kinds. Paper based games, first person shooters classical board games… but you will also focuses on game development—both computer, analogue and other types of games—through structured game design problems, exercises, lectures, and reading. The emphasis will be on an prototyping, playtesting, user experience, and clear concept development. The goal of the class is to explore how design systems (in this case, games) support interactivity through meaningful play. This week long class focuses on the design of games and playful experiences, and will not focus on specific game programming techniques, but you will do a little work in Flash.

The Old Fire House at Redmond partners with 911 media arts center, to host students for a 5 day camp to learn media literacy, critical viewing skills, technical training, and analysis of cinema techniques such as camera angles, lighting, shot composition, editing, sound, and story development. Using these skills and the media arts technology from 911 Media Arts Center, youth will form crews, write, storyboard, direct, shoot, and edit short videos, producing an audio and visual account of their personal and community experiences.

A bold primer in both sailing fundamentals and renegade filmmaking brought to you jointly by 911 Media Arts and The Center for Wooden Boats. ARRRGH! Students will learn to sail, and shoot and edit digital video as they make films related to boats and the water. The meaning, value, and history of piracy in all contexts will be laid open to interpretation, while students are supplied with the tools and skills they need to for such a journey into uncharted waters. By combining the physical immediacy of sailing with the voice and power of filmmaking, the class hopes to provide students with some survival skills for navigating the strange seas of our time.

Another exciting and dynamic collaboration in cyberspace is in collaboration with the group Common Language Project.This class puts online publishing tools into the hands of teens so they might make a change in online journalism. Students learn the power of images and media literacy while creating fun interactive news journals. Aspects of media literacy are intertwined with the latest online technologies so teens can have their say.
